Hanni Flaherty, PhD, LCSW is an assistant Professor & Chair of Advanced Clinical Practice in the Wurzweiler School of Social Work. She has completed her PhD and MSW at New York University Silver School of Social Work. Prior to returning to N for her PhD, Dr. Flaherty practiced clinical social work for over 15 years specializing in adolescent high-risk behaviors. Dr. Flaherty’s research interests are in the areas of clinical social work practice with a focus on innovation implementation and social work education with a focus on the transition to online education. Her research agenda focuses on examining factors that may facilitate the adoption and implementation of evidence-based practices for mental health clinics serving high-risk youths. Dr. Flaherty’s academic training, research and years of clinical social work experience has uniquely positioned her to be an effective teacher of social work education and a researcher informed by her rich clinical experience.
Dr. Flaherty’s interests are focused around clinical social work practice and social work education. Additionally, children and families, adolescent high-risk behaviors, evidence-based practices, intervention and implementation research.
Dr. Flaherty's research interests are in clinical social work practice, focusing on adolescent high-risk behavior, including non-suicidal self-injury, and innovation implementation, emphasizing integrating technology in clinical social work practice, education, and research. Her scholarly research encompasses four main areas thus far: 1. Exploring and analyzing the type and extent of specific factors impacting the adoption and implementation of evidence-based practices in mental health settings serving youths; 2. Understanding the complexities of innovation adoption and implementation of evidence-based practice in mental health settings serving youths, 3. Building on this understanding to develop evidence-based interventions that will be widely adopted and implemented in outpatient mental health services serving high-risk youths, and 4. Improve adoption and implementation by teaching evidence-based practices in innovative ways, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid education, to teach the importance of evidence-based practice to social work students, thus improving mental health services for at-risk adolescents.
