Dr. Jordan Bate, assistant professor in the Combined School-Clinical Child PsyD Program, and Dr. Tracy Prout, associate professor in the School-Clinical Child Psychology Doctoral Program, both at , have co-authored, along with Dr. Tony Rousmaniere (co-founder and program director of Sentio Institute) and Dr. Alexandre Vaz (co-founder and chief academic officer of Sentio Institute), Deliberate Practice in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (May 2022, American Psychological Association).
As Dr. Bate explained, “this is a book for therapists and professors/supervisors on skills for child and adolescent psychotherapists to develop through deliberate practice exercises. It is part of the APA Essentials of Deliberate Practice series, and I believe it is the first one in the series for therapists who work with children and the first that is not specific to a particular treatment approach but rather introduces skills that are common across different types of therapy for youths.”
“The great thing about this new book, and all of the books in the APA series on deliberate practice,” said Dr. Prout, “is that the exercises have been field tested multiple times by trainees and supervisors. The content has been honed and refined by real therapists who generously provided feedback on what was and wasn’t helpful.” Dr. Prout added that “even though I am one of the authors of the book and a relatively experienced therapist, I still practice weekly with deliberate practice exercises. This is a form of therapist training that continually informs how I work with clients, and there is always something new to learn.”
The book is , and on June 15, 2022, Dr. Bate and Dr. Prout will be at the Sentio Institute.
